After making the "Western Bag", I was given a referral of another old friend, Jess, who was in need of a denim bag! Jess and I discussed making a Rasta style bag, much like Gwen Stephani's L.A.M.B. bags, out of a an old pair of jeans. This is what I came up with....
I started by cutting the jeans up both leg seams and removing the zipper and butt seam. Then I opened up the legs, so I would have two large, flat denim pieces to work with. Then I used a large bowl and traced the round shape of the semicircle bag x 2 for the front and back. The legs of the jeans made the long strip that makes the bottom, sides, and houses the zipper on top of the bag.
Red piping was used around the bag to bring in a Rasta color. I tied two red, yellow, and green ribbon bows to each end of the bag for more Rasta feel with a girly twist.
The red bird charm has been around my house for years. One of those things that you know you'll use someday. I attached it as a zipper pull!
Like many of Gwen Stephani's bags, I used leopard material. I quilted the leopard portions with green thread, again, for more Rasta color. The super fun part of this bag is how versatile it is! It can be used denim side out or flipped inside out to rock the leopard side out!
Like the Western Bag, I wanted to add a personal touch with an iron on transfer, but something went very wrong. Maybe I burnt it by holding the iron on too long or the stretchiness of the jeans wouldn't hold the transfer. I don't know. What I do know is that it took me an hour to pick off all the transfer remnants to start all over. The solution was making a cardstock stencil. I used a utility knife to cut the letters and fabric paint to stipple the stencil! I think it worked out nicely.
One of the last things I did was splatter paint the entire bag. I don't know why I did this last. Seems like something I should have done at the beginning, I know. I taped off Jess' name I stenciled and the red piping. Then with a stiff artist paint brush, I "flicked" red, yellow, and green paint all over the bag.....and my bathroom.
Another neat feature of this bag is that I made two handles. The chain gives a glam look, while the black and white gives more of a sporty feel! Jess can match this bag to her mood! Denim or leopard? Chain or black and white?
I love how this bag turned out! It is so spacious and stylish with loads of pockets! Totally my style as well as Jess'! Recycled, funky, girly, versatile, Rasta bag!
Thanks for checking out my site, mon!
